Pitino has served as the head coach at several colleges, including Boston University, Providence College, and the University of Kentucky, where he guided the Wildcats to the 1996 NCAA title.

He also served as an NBA head coach for the Boston Celtics for three full seasons and the New York Knicks for two.

As the only men's coach in NCAA history to guide three different schools (Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville) to a Final Four and the only coach to guide two different schools to an NCAA National Championship, he owns these distinctions (Kentucky and Louisville).

He is one of only four coaches in NCAA history to have led his school to the Final Four in four different decades, and he is one of only two coaches in NCAA history to have guided two different teams to at least three Final Fours each.
