Rick Carlisle is an American professional basketball coach and former professional basketball player.
Carlisle was a guard who competed for the University of Maine, the University of Virginia, and Lisbon Central High School.
The Boston Celtics selected him with pick number 70 in the 1984 NBA Draft, and he played for them from 1984 to 1987.
He joined the New York Knicks from 1987 to 1988 and the New Jersey Nets from 1988 to 1989 after playing for the Albany Patroons of the CBA in 1987.
From 1989 to 1994, Carlisle remained with the Nets as an assistant coach. Then, from 1994 to 1997 and from 1997 to 2000, he worked as an assistant for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Indiana Pacers, respectively.
From 2001 to 2003, Carlisle served as the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. From 2003 to 2007, he served as head coach of the Indiana Pacers before becoming the helm of the Dallas Mavericks in 2008.
Only 11 people, including Carlisle, have won an NBA Championship both as a player and a coach (1986).
In 2002, he was voted NBA Coach of the Year, and in 2004, he oversaw the NBA All-Star Game.
