From 1994 to 1995, he worked as an assistant coach at NCAA division II school Oakland.
Mike later worked as an assistant for the NCAA division I institutions Providence (1995–1998) and Manhattan (1998–2001).
His first NBA position was as an assistant with the New York Knicks from 2001 through 2005.
Male later served as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2011 to 2013 as well as the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2011 to 2013.
2013 saw Malone accept his first NBA head coaching position with the Sacramento Kings.
The Kings finished fourth in the Pacific Division and missed the playoffs in his first season as head coach.
