When he was a kid growing up in Melbourne, Mathew's dream was to become a pro in Australian Rules football, but at the age of 11, he suddenly changed his mind and decided that his destiny was to play soccer!
He obviously didn't regret it, since he became a football star, and a great winger, with his official value now standing at 4.1 million dollars, according to Transfermarkt.
Mathew was playing in the Australian 4th league club Bulleen Lions, until 2009, when he moved to a more competitive club, Adelaide United.
In his AFC Champions League debut, Mathew scored a decisive goal against the rival Pohang Steelers.
He continued to play outstanding football, and was praised for his great performances for the U19 National Australian team.
It was not long before he was spotted by the scouts of Borussia Mönchengladbach, which competes in the Bundesliga, the prestigious German football league. They paid 1.2 million dollars to sign him! However, he had played only 9 official matches for them from 2011 to 2013, which led to him being loaned to FSV Frankfurt in the beginning of 2013.
In June 2013, he made his move to FSV Frankfurt permanent, and had a great season with 31 appearances and 10 goals!
In 2014, Mathew decided to move to FC Ingolstadt 04, and had a successful season with them, with club being promoted to Bundesliga at the end of the season. During the next three years, he played 94 matches and scored 10 goals.
In 2017, he got an offer from Hertha BSC, and signed a one year contract with them. Hertha had to pay Ingolstadt more than 3 million dollars for this transfer!
It turned out that he was a great fit for them, and in November 2017, Mathew managed to score his first European goal against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League!
He is often praised for his tough playing style by the Australian football fans and is considered as the island's best football player!
