Her acting career began in 1987 with the television serial Kachchi Dhoop, based on Louisa May Alcott's Little Women.

Amol Palekar, a prominent actor-director, approached her about acting in the serial and offered her the part after the original actress abruptly dropped out.

She made her cinematic debut alongside Salman Khan in the commercially successful Hindi film Maine Pyaar Kiya in 1989, in which she played Suman. She earned the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for this film, which remains her most successful and well-known to date.
