At his secondary school in Paeroa College, Andrew started running. While competing against seniors as an intermediate runner, he found himself defeating them and smashing school records.
Hedgman didn't discover his love for long distance running until his P.E. teacher Ava Meek challenged him to run a whole marathon.
Andrew participated in a number of marathons and half marathons between 2003 and 2009. He frequently finished in the top three among runners under 20 in the half marathon.
In Taupo, New Zealand, Andrew completed his first ultramarathon in 2009. The 100-kilometer New Zealanders finished in 10 hours, 40 minutes, and 52 seconds, placing them in the top ten.
